How Akron is Preventing Reckless Driving Through Speed Tables

How Akron is Preventing Reckless Driving Through Speed Tables

The City of Akron is taking proactive steps to create safer streets. For years, residents have expressed frustration with the frequent tragedies and crashes caused by reckless driving. Despite clearly marked signs, motorists often exceed the speed limit in several areas, seriously injuring others. To curb this dangerous behavior, the city recently installed speed tables to slow motorists down.

Akron Installs New Speed Tables to Prevent Reckless Driving

Workers installed speed tables at 20 locations throughout Akron. Speed tables are physical obstacles made from recycled rubberized material to get drivers to slow down when passing over them.

The results of these installations are positive. Average speeds slowed by about six miles per hour in the areas where speed tables were placed, according to News 5 Cleveland. That’s a 22 percent decrease in speeding, officials said.

Encouraged by these positive outcomes, Akron plans to install speed tables citywide. They will remove the speed tables during winter but reinstall them when warmer weather returns.

Akron’s comprehensive approach to road safety, combining speed tables and enhanced signage, serves as a model for other communities seeking to address the dangers of those who drive recklessly.

Defensive Driving Tips to Avoid Reckless Drivers

While initiatives like speed tables help improve road safety, defensive driving is a crucial skill that empowers individuals to protect themselves from reckless drivers. Here are some tips for defensive driving:

  • Stay vigilant: Pay attention to your surroundings, anticipate potential hazards, and continuously scan the road around you.
  • Maintain a safe distance: Don’t tailgate. This gives you adequate reaction time if the vehicle in front of you suddenly stops or maneuvers unpredictably.
  • Signal and communicate: Always use your turn signals to indicate your intention to turn or switch lanes.
  • Avoid distractions: Eliminate distractions such as texting while driving, making phone calls, or eating behind the wheel. Activities like these divert your attention from the road and increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents.
  • Observe speed limits: Adhere to posted speed limits and adjust your speed according to road conditions, weather, and traffic flow.
  • Watch for aggressive drivers: Beware of drivers who follow too closely, make frequent lane changes, speed, or behave aggressively. Take appropriate action to distance yourself, and don’t provoke them with gestures, yelling, or glaring.

What To Do After You’re Hurt in a Motor Vehicle Accident

No government action can prevent every car accident. Take these steps if you’re hurt in a crash caused by someone else:

  • Call 911 for police to summon police and paramedics to the accident scene.
  • Take pictures and video of your damaged vehicle, road debris, and skid marks at the crash site.
  • Document your injuries and get medical care right away.
  • Complete your course of treatment.
  • Avoid talking to the insurance company until you speak with a car accident attorney.
